Why a compendium, and why built this way.

Synopsical isn't a notes app that happens to hold a lot of notes. It's built around a specific idea: that a personal reference work should behave like a reference work — entries that connect to each other, real categories instead of a folder tree, and a look that's actually yours instead of the same three grays every other tool ships.

What that means in practice

Entries connect, on purpose

Every entry can link to any other, both directions shown on the page. It's the difference between a pile of notes and something you can actually follow from one idea to the next — closer to how an encyclopedia cross-references itself than how a notes app dumps everything into one flat list.

Categories and tags are real organization

Not a single folder tree you have to commit to upfront. Categories group entries the way an archive's own sections do; tags cut across them for whatever doesn't fit one category cleanly. Both are just typed in as you write — there's no separate step to "set up" your taxonomy first.

Related entries, without you doing the work

Synopsical suggests related entries on its own — first from tags and categories you already gave it, which costs nothing and is easy to explain, and only falls back to comparing meaning once an entry has enough written for that to actually mean something. The free, explainable signal always comes first.

It's supposed to look like yours

Pick a theme, upload your own font files, give each entry its own faceplate. Most tools treat appearance as an afterthought; here it's a real part of the app, because a compendium you're going to keep for years is worth actually liking the look of.

Your data leaves whenever you want

There's a real "export everything" button in the app, not a promise about one. If you ever want your entries in a plain, portable form outside Synopsical, that's one click, not a support ticket.

Still being built

Synopsical is actively developed, not a finished product coasting — new capability lands regularly, and what it costs (see Pricing) hasn't been decided yet on purpose, until there's enough here to justify asking for money for it.
